California has specific tint laws that every driver must follow. Below is a simple breakdown of what’s legal in the state for front, rear, and windshield tinting. These laws apply to all passenger vehicles, SUVs, trucks, and vans
FRONT SIDE WINDOWS
- Must allow 70% of light to pass through
(This includes film + factory glass combined.) - Anything darker is not legal without a medical exemption.
FRONT WINDSHIELD
- Allowed: Top 4-inch visor strip (non-reflective)
- Clear ceramic film is allowed as long as light transmission isn’t reduced.
- No dark tint on the full windshield.
REAR SIDE WINDOWS & BACK WINDSHIELD
ANY tint darkness allowed
As long as you have two functioning side mirrors.
Medical Tint Exemption in California
California does allow darker tint with a medical exemption for conditions such as:
- Light sensitivity
- Lupus
- Skin cancer
- Certain eye conditions
Required:
A licensed physician’s note submitted to the DMV and kept in the vehicle.
Reflective Film Rules
California does not allow:
- Mirror tint
- Highly reflective or chrome-looking films
